Transparency...

Transparency is one of the most important elements for my works; transparency makes a sense of distance. I wanted to use transparent canvas as well as transparent paints. I found the material, "resin" and started to make transparent sculptural paintings. Using resin instead of canvas changed my artwork. At first, I made a box 7"x7"x1", and poured resin in the box 1/8" deep. I painted on the surface of the resin as I do on the canvas. I poured resin again on the box and painted again. Layer by layer, I made a three-dimensional transparent painting. The project was a sketch for my painting. It was a successful experiment for me.

I shifted the image, which I see in the resin piece, onto the flat canvas. My paintings started to have more various spaces. On the other hand, I gained a great interest in sculptural elements. I have concentrated on the resin pieces as my works. Because of the three dimensional techniques, my resin pieces show transforming spaces. The images change depending on the viewers' viewpoints. This is the most important discovery for me to create spaces studying painting and sculpture. I don't want viewers just to look at my works, but want viewers to peep into them. Looking is a kind of passive behavior, but peeping is an active behavior. I hope that viewers participate in my works and move their feet as well as their hearts.

Most of my works have square shapes in contrast to the surface images, which never show straight lines. I think a cubed sculpture piece or a rectangle canvas are the assertions of infinity; it is a compromise of limited spaces and limited expansion of ideas. I always want to create huge works in order to have a body experience. I cut the images artificially and see my works as parts of vision.
